Should I get the new ".co" domain extension
Everyone is promoting the new ".co" extension as the next great domain extension. All the registers are promoting new extensions for a reason, the more people register domains of any extension the more money the registers make. Nothing wrong with that, it is the free market at its best. Whether the ".co" extension succeeds is up to debate.

Personally I don't like the extension for a few reasons. Google has said it will list ".co" domains in all searches unlike most country code extensions so that is a plus but just because they say it now does not mean in the future they won't change their mind. Once you commit to a domain it is forever and if the domain suddenly falls back into a country code search listing that kills all the promotion and development of the website, unless of course you are in Columbia.

A lot of people like the ".co" because it is similar to the ".com" (dotcom) extension. That is where I really disagree. I think it is too similar to the ".com" and people by habit will add add the "m" after they type "co" and go to the dotcom site with the same name. So if you got the domain name HighDefinitionStore.co and tell someone to go to the HighDefinitionStore.co website, when they type it in out of habit many will add the "m" and land on the HighDefinitionStore.com website.

Columbia may be a stable country today but many thought Libya to be stable enough to have their domains with the .ly extension only to have their websites dead due to the curent political chaos.

The more registers add new extensions the more valuable the ".com" domain will get. The ".com" extension is the gold standard of domain names. If you want to have the best domain name you buy a ".com" all others are second class or worse. A domain name represents your company. Your website is your business, the best domain is a .com (dotcom) extension, using anything else limits your business opportunities.
